You can use this formula to determine percentage increase: 100(New Value - Old Value)/(Old Value) Example. "Change" is subtracting one value from another.Example: You had 5 books, but now have 7. You can simply add the first number for the second number of times. How To Multiply Two Numbers Without Using Operator * In Java? The following steps will make you understand the problems.ĭivide cost by whatever it is you want to find its percentage of, then multiply that result by 100%.ExampleCost.ġ x end salary = pensionable salary x pensionable years +r360 How To Add, Subtract, Multiply And Divide Fractions Numbers? You take the number of reduction, and divide that by the initial number. The way to calculate the percentage is as follows: This will make it less confusing if the percentage that you are working to changes at any point and you have to alter your multiplication calculation. You will have a different figure acting as 100% each time as this rises and you may want to keep a running total on a spreadsheet is this is what you are multiplying for. You may need to add on interest and see how this will accumulate interest on top of what is already there. There are many reasons why you would want to multiply a percentage. If you then wish to add another 10% to your original amount, you should do the same thing again with the $40 as your 100% and then you will have to add the 10% and the 20% together. This new figure, if it is to be a whole amount, will then turn into 100%. 40 x 1.20 This will give you 120% and therefore you will have multiplied the percentage. If you have $40 and you wish to add another 20% on to this, you just need to multiply what you already have you need to do the following calculation. Getting your head around the percentage being 100 rather than a number itself is the hardest thing when you start multiplying percentages. If you wish to add 20% to this, you will then have 120%. If you are multiplying a percentage, you need to understand that the number you have is 100%. In truth, we don’t even need to make a ratio or fraction out of 100 to do this, but it’s a good place to start our understanding of the math behind the whole process. To multiply percentages you need to work in a very similar way to multiplying normal whole numbers. The idea is we can take these ratios or fractions and turn them into percentages by making the ratio or fraction out of 100. We would say that 42 feet out of a total of 121 feet of pipe is plastic.Īll right: we’ve added a few new things to our math library here, but you might be asking right about now, “Aren’t we dealing with percentages in this chapter? How does all this ratio and fraction stuff relate to percentages?” Ratios are similar to fractions, and each ratio can be written as a fraction. In this case, the 121 is derived from adding the plastic pipe and the steel pipe lengths together.Īt this point, you might be thinking that this looks and sounds familiar, and you would be correct. What is the ratio of plastic pipe to steel pipe that we need to install?Īnother question might be how much of the pipe is plastic in relation to how much total pipe we have. We have 42 feet of plastic pipe and 79 feet of steel pipe to install. Here is another example: let’s say we are on a job site, and we have to install some pipe. Regardless of which way we describe our pizza eating, what we are dealing with is the relationship between two numbers. In this case, 3 pieces of the pizza were eaten while 5 pieces were not. We could also write a ratio that identified how many pieces of the pizza were eaten and how many were not eaten. A ratio of 3:8 means that we have eaten 3 of the 8 pieces in the pizza. It has its own style, just like a fraction does. If we were to once again order a pizza and eat 3 of the 8 slices, we could look at that as a ratio. Mathematically speaking, a ratio is a relationship between two numbers. We should take a bit of time to talk about ratios and what they are. We already went through fractions in a past chapter, so we know what those are all about. Percentages, ratios, and fractions are all very similar and can be used to represent numbers in different ways, but with similar outcomes. What does a ratio have to do with percentage? What does a fraction have to do with percentage? What is a ratio? These are all good questions, and we’ll answer them here. In several modern villages, quipus have continued to be important items for the local community. As the region was subsumed under the Spanish Empire, quipus were mostly replaced by European writing and numeral systems, and most quipu were identified as idolatrous and destroyed, but some Spaniards promoted the adaptation of the quipu recording system to the needs of the colonial administration, and some priests advocated the use of quipus for ecclesiastical purposes. They subsequently played a key part in the administration of the Kingdom of Cusco and later the Inca Empire, flourishing across the Andes from c. Objects that can be identified unambiguously as quipus first appear in the archaeological record in the first millennium AD (though debated quipus are much earlier ). The configuration of the quipus has been "compared to string mops." Archaeological evidence has also shown the use of finely carved wood as a supplemental, and perhaps sturdier, base to which the color-coded cords would be attached. A quipu could have only a few or thousands of cords. The cords stored numeric and other values encoded as knots, often in a base ten positional system. The Inca people used them for collecting data and keeping records, monitoring tax obligations, collecting census records, calendrical information, and for military organization. Ī quipu usually consisted of cotton or camelid fiber strings. Limited: 4 (since you get the first crack at casting things after Time Spiral, that makes this a slightly less risky investment)Ĭommander : 5 (a competent deck may well turn one Time Spiral into a won game, and this is a phenomenal way to extend a combo to its breaking point) It’s still vicious, though, and the good thing about it being on the Reserved List (in a sense) is that it’s less likely to be able to destroy Standard again.Ĭonstructed: 3 (I don’t think this is completely dead in Legacy, but making this shine is definitely not an easy task) It’s never gotten a foothold in Legacy that I know of, though it’s a bit too slow (and Tolarian Academy will never, ever, ever be unbanned), and there are enough release valves to make this less likely to warp the game into a disaster on resolution. Time Spiral is powerful if it ever gets a chance to resolve, and most decks that run it will try to make sure it happens. You reset hands and graveyards, but with the mana to cats something from that new hand immediately, and that gives this great legs as a combo extender and enabler, and it’s part of what drove the entire block past the limits of what most people would consider “fair” and “reasonable”. Unless this gets countered, you’re likely losing nothing to cast Time Spiral once it resolves (besides the Time Spiral itself), and this pairs viciously with cards like Tolarian Academy to generate even more mana. It can be used in more interesting decks than just Storm or Tolarian Academy, and I kind of want to see a deck that tries to copy it and then rush to play instants between the resolution of the copy and that of the original, as some kind of doubling-down on the Dragon Break-style concept the card plays with!Ĭonstructed: 3/5 (in current Legacy in 1998 Standard it was easily a 5)Ĭoming out of a set with a notoriously high power level to begin with, Time Spiral (never before reviewed on Pojo) is a card I’ve referenced intermittently when Timetwister-style effects get mentioned, and not without reason: aside from the original Timetwister, I would argue this is the strongest of its effect ever printed, and it’s thanks to the appearance of the “refund” mechanic that helped split Urza’s Saga in half. Did Timetwister really need to be stronger? Did you really need to get essentially a whole new turn with seven cards in hand – something even Time Walk can’t reliably do? Did you really need to be able to combine it with multi-mana lands and generate more mana than you started with? Having said that, while it was one of the contributing factors for breaking Urza’s Saga Standard in half, I wouldn’t necessarily discourage it in casual play. I was quite shocked the first time I saw Time Spiral’s game text, and I’m still kind of at a loss to explain it almost 25 years later. Curiously, the same is now true of the expansion it appeared in (and now that Sagas are a regularly recurring thing, I’d be a little surprised if the same wasn’t soon true of The Brothers’ War). Time Spiral has a non-gameplay distinction that’s rare among Magic cards: it is the name of both a card and an expansion. |
